SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 972
|
|
WHEREAS, Glenna Burns of Lubbock has rendered exceptional |
|
service to her community as an educator and as a community |
|
volunteer; and |
|
WHEREAS, An alumna of Texas Tech University, Mrs. Burns |
|
had completed 40 hours of coursework at Tech when she began |
|
teaching at Community Center Schools in 1946, at the age of 17; |
|
she married the following year and became a homemaker and the |
|
mother of two sons, Ted and James; in 1961, she returned to Texas |
|
Tech to complete her degree, and following her graduation in |
|
1963, she embarked on an outstanding 27-year career in the |
|
Lubbock Independent School District; she served on numerous |
|
committees, created and organized workshops, raised scholarship |
|
funds, and worked to increase participation in the state's |
|
textbook selection process; in addition, she was instrumental in |
|
the establishment of a sick leave bank for district personnel, |
|
and she was elected to its inaugural board of directors; and |
|
WHEREAS, Mrs. Burns remained deeply engaged in education |
|
and youth enrichment following her retirement; she volunteered |
|
in schools, and she served the Texas Retired Teachers Association |
|
in many capacities, among them as board member, state health care |
|
chair, state convention chair, and district and local president; |
|
a powerful advocate for retired educators, she has written more |
|
than 200 letters to newspaper editorial boards across the state |
|
about important issues; her numerous accolades include the |
|
prestigious 2013 E. L. Galyean Service Award from the Texas |
|
RetiredTeachersAssociation;moreover,sheledthe |
|
|
Adopt-a-School Program of Altrusa International of Lubbock, and |
|
she has given generously of her time and talents to the League of |
|
Women Voters, the Family Guidance and Outreach Center's |
|
Connection Kids, the Twentieth Century Club, and many other |
|
groups; and |
|
WHEREAS, There is no greater challenge or responsibility |
|
than the education of our children, and through her steadfast |
|
dedication to that mission, Glenna Burns has made vital |
|
contributions to her community and her state; now, therefore, be it |
|
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the Texas, 84th Legislature, |
|
hereby honor Glenna Burns for her endeavors in behalf of public |
|
education and extend to her sincere best wishes for the future; |
|
and, be it further |
|
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this Resolution be |
|
prepared for Mrs. Burns as an expression of high regard from the |
|
Texas Senate. |
