R E S O L U T I O N
         WHEREAS, The Corpus Christi Independent School District's
  Office of Food Services and its director, Jody Houston, have won
  well-deserved national recognition from Food Service Equipment and
  Supplies magazine; and
         WHEREAS, A feature article in the magazine has highlighted
  the success of CCISD's Food Services, which operates in the black
  while providing a nutritious lunch to nearly 80 percent of the
  district's 38,694 students every day; and
         WHEREAS, Long recognized as one of the most efficient and
  financially sound school food-service programs in the nation, the
  program relies upon the Gertrude B. Applebaum Food Service Center,
  a state-of-the-art central kitchen built in 1997 under the
  direction of CCISD's director and assistant superintendent,
  Gertrude Applebaum; this 81,000-square-foot facility prepares bulk
  meals for all elementary schools and prepackaged meals for schools
  without kitchens, and it also packages fruits, vegetables, salads,
  sandwiches, and baked goods for all the schools in the district; and
         WHEREAS, Jody Houston, the current food service director,
  started working with the district in 1982 and played a vital role in
  the design of the kitchen, which was built without interior walls to
  make movement more efficient and to allow the staff to adapt quickly
  to changing needs; the center fields two shifts, a day shift for
  baking and prepackaging meals and a night shift for bulk satellite
  operations; the kitchen also stands ready as the City of Corpus
  Christi's emergency feeder, in the event of a natural disaster; and
         WHEREAS, Benefiting from skilled and innovative management,
  economies of scale, and the latest in food-service technology, the
  CCISD Office of Food Services provides tasty and nutritious meals
  to thousands of schoolchildren with impressive speed and
  efficiency, while spending its budget wisely; now, therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 84th Texas
  Legislature hereby congratulate Jody Houston and the Corpus Christi
  ISD Office of Food Services for earning national recognition from
  Food Service Equipment and Supplies magazine and extend to
  Ms. Houston and her staff sincere best wishes for continued success
  in their important work; and, be it further
         RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
  prepared for CCISD's Office of Food Services as an expression of
  high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
