A BILL TO BE ENTITLED

AN ACT to provide that all first degree murder cases shall be appealed directly to the north carolina supreme court.

The General Assembly of North Carolina enacts:

SECTION 1.  G.S. 7A‑27(a) reads as rewritten:

"(a)       Appeal lies of right directly to the Supreme Court in all cases in which the defendant is convicted of murder in the first degree and the judgment of the superior court includes a sentence of death.degree."

SECTION 2.  This act becomes effective October 1, 2013, and applies to appeals filed in first degree murder cases on or after that date.
