Florida Senate - 2019 SB 996 By Senator Hutson 7-01212-19 2019996__ 1 A bill to be entitled 2 An act relating to possession of firearms on school 3 property; amending s. 790.115, F.S.; revising a 4 provision relating to the possession of firearms in 5 student campus parking; providing an effective date. 6 7 Be It Enacted by the Legislature of the State of Florida: 8 9 Section 1. Paragraph (a) of subsection (2) of section 10 790.115, Florida Statutes, is amended to read: 11 790.115 Possessing or discharging weapons or firearms at a 12 school-sponsored event or on school property prohibited; 13 penalties; exceptions.— 14 (2)(a) A person shall not possess any firearm, electric 15 weapon or device, destructive device, or other weapon as defined 16 in s. 790.001(13), including a razor blade or box cutter, except 17 as authorized in support of school-sanctioned activities, at a 18 school-sponsored event or on the property of any school, school 19 bus, or school bus stop; however, a person may carry a firearm: 20 1. In a case to a firearms program, class or function which 21 has been approved in advance by the principal or chief 22 administrative officer of the school as a program or class to 23 which firearms could be carried; 24 2. In a case to a career center having a firearms training 25 range; or 26 3. In a vehicle pursuant to s. 790.25(5); except that 27 school districts may adopt written and published policies that 28 waive the exception in this subparagraph for purposes of student 29andcampus parking privileges. 30 31 For the purposes of this section, “school” means any preschool, 32 elementary school, middle school, junior high school, secondary 33 school, career center, or postsecondary school, whether public 34 or nonpublic. 35 Section 2. This act shall take effect July 1, 2019.
